My Statement of Gratitude

Ann Howley at Namibian Sunrise - Visit webpage of Joe Restuccia III at www.joesharpshotphotos.com

I write this statement about myself with complete gratitude. I am blessed to be able to introduce myself as a Photographer.

I came to photography through a love for travel. In 1995, I was fortunate to go to East Africa. There I was struck by the true wonder of nature. On that trip, I also learned the peace that comes to me when I am in the midst of such beauty. For that trip, I had borrowed my brother's manual camera and had no idea how to use it. Any decent images from that trip are the result of luck.

For our 40th birthdays (1997), my college roommate, Sharon, and I bought Canon SLR cameras. I took every opportunity presented to travel with that camera. We used those cameras for our big trip to Peru and the Galapagos Islands in 2000. I also used it for three more trips to Africa and three to Asia.

While my love for photography was developing, another important factor contributed to my journey. In 1998, Sharon and I got involved in the Avon 3-day walks that raised money for breast cancer research and early detection. I did these walks in memory of my mother who died of breast cancer in 1979. By physically training for the seven walks that I eventually did, I was also able to expand my travels. Thus, I can humbly say that I took the birthday camera to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro (after 4 days of trekking) in 2001 and the base camp of Mount Everest (after 7 days of trekking) in 2002.

I bought my first digital camera, a Canon 10D, in 2003. I launched that camera with trips to capture images of polar bears in the Arctic and penguins in the Antarctic. After that, my film camera was respectfully retired.

I made the big leap to become a full-time Nature, Wildlife, and Travel Photographer on August 30, 2004. On that date, I left a career of over 25 years that had graciously paid my bills, allowing me to travel and buy my photography equipment. I entered the unknown with images from the seven continents and a desire to share these with the world. I can honestly say that I don't know where this path is leading, but at this moment, I am happy (and again, I repeat, grateful) to be on it.

I dedicate my photography to my mother and my friends (Sue, Lynne, Liz,  Alix and Arlette) who all died too young. I hope that in sharing the beauty of the world with others I can honor them.
